Obama, Cuomo, Bloomberg, Clinton commemorate American vets on Memorial Day

In Washington, President Barack Obama laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Meanwhile, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, mayoral hopeful Christine Quinn, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended various commemorations.

Local and national politicians took a day off from campaigning and bickering Monday to pay tribute the country's fallen soldiers, standing with fellow Americans in Memorial Day ceremonies across the nation.

"Let us not forget as we gather here today that our nation is still at war," a somber Obama said at Arlington National Cemetery. "When they give their lives, they are still being laid to rest in cemeteries in quiet corners across our country, including here in Arlington."
Earlier on Monday, the president and First Lady Michelle Obama hosted a White House breakfast for the families of service members who had been killed.

In New York, Michael Bloomberg and a bevy of pols looking to replace him as the city's next mayor, also honored the fallen.
Bloomberg joined military leaders and grateful New Yorkers at the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument on the upper West Side of Manhattan, calling on Americans to "remember the sacrifice that was made so that we could be here."

Meanwhile, in Queens, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination in the city's mayoral race, was joined by City Controller John Liu and newly minted candidate Anthony Weiner at the borough's Memorial Day parade.

While the trio honored the many servicemen and servicewomen the state has lost over the years, the threesome mostly spent the morning greeting parade spectators and working for their votes.
The Queens march, however, wasn't the only parade that transformed into a possible electoral preview.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and former Secretary of State and New York Sen. Hillary Clinton joined New Castle residents, in Westchester County, in the town's own Memorial Day parade - in what could end up being a sneak peak at the candidates for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination.
The ambitious duo dressed appropriately for the slow walk through town: Cuomo sported a blue blazer and white shirt, while Clinton touted a fire-engine red blazer and a scarf adorned with the American flag.
