'Hissing' passenger tied up with shoe-laces after he tries to open jet plane door mid-flight

A passenger on an Alaska Airlines flight had to be restrained with shoe strings this morning after he tried to open the plane's emergency door mid- flight.
Ten minutes before Flight 132 was due to land in Portland, Oregon, Alexander Michael Herrera, 23 allegedly tried to open the emergency door after making 'unusual' statements.
The plane's crew and other passengers in row 17 had to restrain him with shoe laces and belt clips.

Airliner doors have locks that prevent them from being opened in flight.

He was arrested by FBI agents at Portland International Airport on a charge of interfering with a flight crew.

Ryan Oelrich told ABC News he was sleeping during the flight when he awoke to a 'loud hissing noise' and 'lots of screaming'.

'My first thought was that the plane must be going down, but then I heard someone screaming to stop him, take him down,' he said.
'I looked behind me and in the exit row was a very large gentleman who was attempting to open the exit row door.'
Passenger Henry Pignataro told KTVB that after the man was restrained he was put into a seat 'where he was surrounded by big guys'
The plane was only nine minutes behind schedule despite the incident.
